Global BC has partnered with Crime Stoppers programs in BC to create re-enactments or follow-up stories on crimes that remain unsolved in BC. The Community
Crime Stoppers exists in offering an anonymous way for the public to provide information to the police that could help solve a crime. Local Citizens form the foundation of a Crime Stoppers program by serving as volunteer directors on the Crime Stoppers board whose responsibility is to operate the non-profit corporation, raise funds, promote the program and approve reward payments when crimes are solved.
The Media
Local media outlets have responsibility for promoting Crime Stoppers by publicizing unsolved crimes and assisting with appeals to raise funds for the program. The media also regularly promotes the special Crime Stoppers phone number and Web Tips.
The Police
Appoint a coordinator to operate the Crime Stoppers program on a daily basis. Anonymity to callers is guaranteed, no equipment exists to record or trace the phone calls, Text Messages or Web Tips. Those who contact Crime Stoppers will receive a code number, specific to their call, that allows them to follow up on their report to determine if an arrest, charge, or goods have been recovered. Police investigate the information provided by Crime Stoppers and provide a report back to the Coordinator when their investigation is complete. The Coordinator reports the results of the investigation to the Board, if a reward is warranted, and the Board makes the final decision on the amount to be given to the Tipster.
